As a Manchester United fan in 2019 it could be argued that there isn’t much to be hopeful for going into the 2019-2020 season. With only two signings so far to try to improve a lacklustre looking side, it could look like once again we could be in for another long season.
However, a player that shouldn’t be underestimated going into pre-season should be our new speedy winger, Daniel James. Arriving from Swansea for £18 million, which is a steal in regards to today’s market, Daniel could be the injection of pace and ferocity going forward that United have been searching for for numerous years now.
Scoring 6 goals and achieving 7 assists for the Swans last year in the championship, James provides blistering pace, perfect for counter-attacking football which Old Trafford has been starved of for some years now.
James also provides an incredible work ethic due to his exceptional fitness, which he’s shown already at United by dominating various fitness tests, coming out on top of the sprints – both short and long.
He also maxed out the bleep test which, if you’ve ever taken part in one, you know is bloody difficult.
Coming into the new season I believe James will play a key part in transforming our left hand side into a force to be reckoned with. The left-wing position has been problematic for United in recent years, showcasing prestigious names like Sanchez, Martial and Rashford but overall none of them were really able to make the spot their own.
Personally, I want to see James thrive as a left winger that’s unpredictable, able to beat a man with lightning speed and deliver a ball in early. I’m also intrigued to see how Pogba will latch onto a winger consistently running in behind. Hoping to see some ‘quarter-backesque’ passes sprayed around under the lights at Old Trafford.
We’ll also potentially see a relationship blossoming with Manchester United’s 2018/19 Player of the Season ‘Luke Shaw’. Hopefully Shaw continues his overall progression and stays fit meaning we could be seeing the two British lads link up on that left hand side week in week out. It has been said that James can also played right forward aswell, so could be interesting to see which side Ole utilises him on, as United haven’t had a proper right-winger at the club since Nani!
James has travelled with the squad to Australia and will be looking to impress in our opening game against Perth Glory. He was filmed last night by fellow team-mate Angel Gomes performing his own rendition of Uncle Kracker hit ‘Follow Me’. Let’s just say I hope his performance is better on the pitch…
