Transfer Talk: Centre-back Situation at Manchester United

We all know about the troubles that Manchester United have in their back line, which statistically had one of their worst ever seasons in 2018/19. But United signed Aron Wan Bissaka from Crystal place who is a very good defender and will be a huge upgrade on the club captain Ashley Young, but the hunt for a centre-back continues.

Here’s the players that could join United this summer

1: Harry Maguire, 26. The Leicester city giant looks to be the first choice for Ole as he wants young and British talents to come in and take the team forward. United wanted to sign Maguire last season but failed to pay Leicester the £45m valuation. A price which has since believed to of almost doubled a year later, with Leicester reportedly asking for a deal in excess of £75m, and they won’t sell for anything less because, frankly, they don’t have to.

Maguire still has 4 years on his contract with the club and it’s been reported that he won’t force a move out of Leicester, which will make things easier for Leicester to keep him at King Power Stadium. But if it does happen, and United can bring him in, he will bring a lot of quality and stability to the back line of the Red Devils. He’s very good on the ball, reliable in one on one situations, a good reader of the game, and one of the best in the league with aerial duals, which is the kind of strength United’s defence desperately needs.

2: Khalido Koulibaly, 27. The Napoli defender has been linked to a move to Old Trafford since last December. He was a target that Jose Mourinho wanted, but even after ‘The Special One’ was sacked, the club remained interested in. The deal collapsed early in this summer because of Napoli’s unrealistic asking price of more than £100m, and it seemed that United moved away from it but last two weeks some reliable sources from Italy reported that Koulibaly wants out and he’ll force a move if necessary.

United will look at the situation closely and I think these reports are one of the determining factors as to why United still haven’t signed a centre-back in this window. Koulibaly is currently playing with Senegal in the African Cup of Nations, so he wants it focus on that, but we can expect him to decide his future once the tournament ends. Koulibaly would take the United defence to the next level and make them one of the stronger defences in the league.

3: Issa Diop, 22. The French international was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, although a lot of fans perhaps haven’t seen enough of him yeat, and were unsure on his capabilities. He played 33 matches last season for West ham and is believed to be valued at around £45m. According to various sources, he’s in the shortlist of the defenders United are looking to bring in this summer, however they are prioritising other targets. The 6’4 defender had a stellar season last year at West Ham and has a lot of potential. However, I don’t see much of an indifference between him and a fit Eric Bailly, so I don’t think this is the right move for Manchester United as they need a legitimate heavyweight in this position.

4: Toby Alderweireld, 30.The Belgium international was heavily linked with a move to old Trafford last summer but the deal collapsed because Spurs were asking for around £50m, but United, conscious of his age and limited contract at Spurs, refused to pay more than £40m. He has a release clause this season for only £25m, which becomes active on August 1st. The 30-year-old defender will bring in leadership, experience and professionalism into a team that lacks those exact qualities and will be a huge upgrade over Jones and Smalling. I believe that United have him as a back-up plan if they failed to sign Koulibaly or Maguire, but only time will tell. Man United will sign a centre-back this summer I’m sure of it, but which one? We will have to let time tell, let’s all just hope for our sake, they sign the right one.
