On Saturday 13th of July at 12:00pm BST, Perth Glory will welcome Manchester United to the Optus Stadium to kickstart their preseason campaign. Although United are the clear favourites, Perth Glory aren’t by any means a pushover, after winning the Australian A-League by 8 points. United will need to keep an eye on Perth Glory’s main striker, Andy Keogh quiet as he netted a respectable 15 league goals last season.
Diego Castro could always be a threat to United. Diego spent 14 years in Spain for the clubs Pontevedra, Malaga B, Malaga, Sporting Gijon and Getafe. He contributed 73 goals in those 14 years which is respectable coming from midfield and considering the opposition he came up against. In 2015, Castro moved to Australia to play for Perth and has made them a much stronger side by scoring 42 goals in 96 games from the left wing. Recently, Castro signed a two year contract extension and has been named the club captain. United need to stay awake to make sure he is dealt with in the right manner.
Jake Brimmer is another player you should keep your eye on. Jake is a 21-year old midfielder who spent 3 years at Livepool during his youth career and is known for his quick feet, vision and passing. He currently plays in the middle of the park and loves to get on the ball; his quick feet could cause some of the United players problems and in 2018, he collected the Dylan Tombides Young Player of the Year.
There is an exciting opportunity to see what United’s new signings have to offer during this pre-season. Manchester United’s first signing, Daniel James, topped the United fitness drills and beat some players by up to 5 metres in a 100-meter sprint. That’s enormously exciting to think about especially when you consider United’s counter-attacking ability with him, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. The Young Welsh forward signed for United for a reported fee of £15million after contributing 4 goals and 7 assists in 28 starts for Swansea City last season. Without a doubt, Daniel James is one to keep an eye on.
Along with Daniel James, Manchester United signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a fee in the region of £50 million. AWB had an outstanding campaign last season with Crystal Palace and is considered one of the best right-backs in the league and arguably even the world. AWB will be hoping to have a positive start to his United career and go on to be United’s starting right-back for years to come, which will certainly be a welcome change to United fans, whose animosity towards Ashley Young is ever-growing.
Many fans believe that Daniel James & Aaron Wan-Bissaka could both play on the right side in the opening preseason game, leaving Anthony Martial to play on his favoured left side, or down the middle of the attack. Both players could play a part in United getting off to a winning start against Perth Glory thanks to the sheer amount of pace that Daniel James has showcased and the overlapping runs that could cause serious damage to Perth’s defence.
Along with both new signings, the ever-exciting talent Mason Greenwood could feature for United. After an impressive 15 goals and 4 assists in 13 games for the United U-18 squad, has his time come? Many United fans would love for him to start and compete against Rashford for the upcoming season.
